Viewfactor Impero Micro Wired Digital Follow Focus
Written by Tonaci Tran

Fresh off the news grill. Curt von Badinski gave us the scoop on new photos and info about View Factor's latest creation:
The Impero Micro Wired Digital Follow Focus.

This could be a great solution until their wireless control unit comes out. This also could serve as a backup to a wireless FF.
Hopefully this comes out soon.

"I'm really excited to introduce the impero micro. It is essentially a wired digital follow focus - You can mount it on the camera
like a conventional mechanical follow focus but with the added benefit of being able to take it off camera using up to a 9 foot
cable. This little unit packs some great features. You can adjust the gearing of the motor on the fly, adjust the lens travel
range, and adjust the knob travel range. This allows you to take lenses with limited range and expand it so the entire range
of the knob controls the limited range on the lens. You can also limit the range on the knob to cover the full range of the lens.
We will have more information on this in the next month... stay tuned for some other toys as well."

Actioncam RED Edition Part I Review

Introduction

Before I begin, I want to give special thanks to Steve Gibby and Ken Corben of GibCOR for inviting me to L.A.R.T, (Los Angeles Area RED Test). I have been envious of Steve for the last couple of months because he had something I desired in his possession. He had the very first Actioncam specifically configured to work with the RED camera. He was saving it for LA.R.T. and quite fortuitously Brian Goff, the creator of the Actioncam himself, decided to fly all the way from Switzerland to demonstrate it. Usually when talks of camera stabilizers come up, there are different companies that come to my mind like the Steadicam and Glidecam. About a year ago, Brian made an announcement on the REDuser forum about the launch of a stabilizer that would utilize the Red components such as the LCD and basic production pack (Rods and Cradle). Fast forward to L.A.R.T. and the day finally came when I not only saw it in action but had the opportunity to actually fly it. I was so impressed that I ended up taking it home with me. Thank you Brian and Steve.

Pricing

The price is perhaps the most compelling reason to consider the Actioncam (besides being a great stabilizer), especially if you are a RED owner. I love the idea that you can use your existing Red components (gear you are likely to own anyway as a RED owner) such as the RED lcd and the RED basic production pack for counter balancing purposes. To get a comparable rig that can handle the weight of a fully configured RED, you will be looking at spending 20,000-30,000 if not more. As mentioned in my GROUP BUY post, the Actioncam is listed at $9,900.00 until 12/31/07 and will be $11,900.00 starting 01/01/08 due to the weak US dollar. The price includes the vest, arm, shaft with camera baseplate, euro allen wrench set, and mounting bracket that works on a c-stand. You can view pics of these items below. The price does not include the case, which is optional, however, it is recommended to purchase the cases since they will serve as excellent shipping cases that will come configured to house the vest and Actioncam unit.

Actioncam Red Edition includes:

- RED edition sled; (w/o Monitor)
- Zero-g Arm (11-41 lb Load spring packs)
- Back mounted vest (for loads up to 50lbs)
- Dovetail plate
- Dynamic Spin & Docking Bracket
- RED Power Cable
- Allen wrench set
- Owner's Manual

Part II of my review will be coming in a couple of weeks featuring more rig pics. Very soon, however, through Gibcor's L.A.R.T. test, you will be able to see the footage Brian shot with the Red Edition Actioncam. I will be posting footage of my own in part II of my review.

REDmodz visits Element Technica - Underwater Housing
Written by Tonaci Tran
Tuesday, 18 December 2007 07:00
I was invited by Stephen Pizzo to come check out the latest projects that Element Technica has been working on. A couple of weeks ago at Gibcor's L.A.R.T. (Los Angeles RED Test) the team was treated to a sneek peek of the proto versions of their EVF mount and breakout box. Matt Uhry gave a breakdown on REDuser here. Last friday I was given a chance to see their new top mount and cheeseplate combo which should be available in a couple of weeks. More details and photos will be released once the designs are completely finalized. From what I have seen so far with the quality of their Arri baseplate sold through RED, Element Technica is definitely developing innovative and rock solid cine-centric gear for RED.

Something I wasn't expecting to see was a custom made underwater housing made for RED which the Element Technica guys refer to as the "Mullet" though there is no official name for this beauty yet.

Tech Specs:

- Tubular shape gives it very low drag when swimming.
- Manual focus and Iris control via proprietary through-housing lens control.
- Remote start is via the big red lever next to the right side pistol grip. This actuates a standard push button on/off switch which is cabled into the camera through the LEMO.
- Remote start is also possible via a Preston MDR 2. There is an SMA bulkhead connector for wireless connectivity for splash housing work or it can be hardwired.
- Video comes out of the housing through a waterproof connector and cable. There are two HD-SDI lines for eventual dual link support. It has been tested with the 720P preview.
- The chrome “baby pin” on top of the housing is for our deep-water monitor housing. (Currently being modified to use RED or Panasonic LCD.
- The housing is weighted and balanced for neutral buoyancy. Weight can be removed for surface work.
- The dome port maintains the same focal length while underwater.
- A flat port is also available for surface work.
- The housing pictured is compatible with Arri Ultra Primes from 8mm through 32mm.
