I was invited by Stephen Pizzo to come check out the latest projects that Element Technica has been working on. A couple of weeks ago at Gibcor's L.A.R.T. (Los Angeles RED Test) the team was treated to a sneek peek of the proto versions of their EVF mount and breakout box. Matt Uhry gave a breakdown on REDuser here. Last friday I was given a chance to see their new top mount and cheeseplate combo which should be available in a couple of weeks. More details and photos will be released once the designs are completely finalized. From what I have seen so far with the quality of their Arri baseplate sold through RED, Element Technica is definitely developing innovative and rock solid cine-centric gear for RED. Something I wasn't expecting to see was a custom made underwater housing made for RED which the Element Technica guys refer to as the "Mullet" though there is no official name for this beauty yet. Tech Specs:
- Tubular shape gives it very low drag when swimming. - Manual focus and Iris control via proprietary through-housing lens control. - Remote start is via the big red lever next to the right side pistol grip. This actuates a standard push button on/off switch which is cabled into the camera through the LEMO. - Remote start is also possible via a Preston MDR 2. There is an SMA bulkhead connector for wireless connectivity for splash housing work or it can be hardwired. - Video comes out of the housing through a waterproof connector and cable. There are two HD-SDI lines for eventual dual link support. It has been tested with the 720P preview. - The chrome “baby pin” on top of the housing is for our deep-water monitor housing. (Currently being modified to use RED or Panasonic LCD. - The housing is weighted and balanced for neutral buoyancy. Weight can be removed for surface work. - The dome port maintains the same focal length while underwater. - A flat port is also available for surface work. - The housing pictured is compatible with Arri Ultra Primes from 8mm through 32mm.
